Guidelines for all candles
* Never leave a burning candle unattended. A lit candle is a fire.
* Keep burning candles away from children and pets.
* Do not burn candles near flammable objects such as curtains, lamp shades, etc.
* Place your candle on a protected, non-flammable heat resistant surface. Use an appropriate holder to protect surfaces from potential staining or dripping wax.
* Keep your candle free of wick trimmings, matches or other foreign objects that could be a fire hazard.
* Burn your candle in a draft-free area to help it burn evenly & avoid dripping and/or smoking. Any candle will drip or smoke in a draft. Also, nearby heat sources may encourage dripping and should be avoided.
* Allow candle to cool between uses.
* Avoid burning candles in small, closed rooms: a candle needs oxygen to burn cleanly.
* Extinguish your candle when it is within 1/4 inch of its holder.
* To extinguish a candle, use a snuffer or hold two fingers together in front of the flame so you can's see it, blow directly at your fingers. This will prevent hot wax from splattering on furniture.
* Always store candles in a cool, dry place. When storing scented candles for a long period of time, wrap them in cellophane to preserve the scent.
* Avoid placing candles in direct sunlight or spotlights. Candles will fade if left in direct light for extended periods of time. Watch out for sunny days and window displays as the glass magnifies the sun and may warp and /or melt the candles.
* Remove packaging and labels prior to burning your candle.
* To remove the wax residue from a candle holder, run hot water over the holder and then wipe off the warm wax with a paper towel, or place it in the freezer for a few hours, then carefully chip the wax off.
* Keep lit candles at least 2 inches apart to avoid improper melting. If too close they will affect each others burning quality due to the combined heat. * Use caution when burning candles in hurricane lamps as more heat is generated and your candle will melt more rapidly.
Tips for pillar candles
* The first time you light a pillar candle, burn it long enough to create a pool of wax that almost reaches its edge. In future uses, a candle will burn only as far from the wick as it did the first time.
* After pillars are broken in, they should be burned until the wax pool reaches the outside rim every time they are burned. This process will provide even burning throughout the life of the candle. The general rule is to burn a pillar candle one hour for each inch of the candles diameter every time you light the candle. If it burns longer, the melted wax will become too deep which weakens the candle's wall, causing it to collapse and spill wax. Also, the wick may drown in a wax pool that is too deep.
* Trim the candle's wick to 1/4 inch prior to lighting each time. This prevents the wick from becoming too long or crooked, prevents dark smoke and soot in the air, and extends the life of the candle.
* Rotate your candle occasionally to help it burn evenly. Keep the wick centered; a spoon handle works well for centering wick. Hugging your candle by tucking the sides and edges in towards the center helps maintain an even burn.
